My teaching style consists of three major components: 1. Technique, nearly everyone has the capacity to learn to play drums but few are born with this ability. A simple 5 minute exercise taught at the first lesson sets the foundation on which to build. 2. The Three R's: Rudiments, Reading, and Rhythms. Rudiments are to drumming what scales are to pitched instruments. They were first developed by armies to communicate in the battle field. One rudiment (short rhythm), is like applying each letter of the alphabet rhythm, like a drumming Morse code. 3. It’s time for some fun and applying those skills to playing music that the student has an interest in. This approach to my instruction not only develops the discipline needed to play drums but also allows the student to enjoy and have fun doing it.
